2010 - July 13 (Day 28) Denali to Fairbanks & Riverboat Trip

We got on the road about 10:30 after making the last blog posts. The trip from Denali to Fairbanks was beautiful, and we did see a moose. We arrived at The River's Edge RV Resort at were assigned a campsite next to Jim & Bonnie, who were already there, by 1:00pm. We told the girl we wanted to go on the Discovery Riverboat trip. She said they'll pick you up out front at 1:15! We dropped the camper at the campsite, hooked up the electricity, changed the fridge over to AC and made the bus with time to spare.

There were two boats; Discovery II and Discovery III. Discovery III was our boat and quite a bit larger than Discovery II. The trip took about 3.5 hours, including the stop at Chena Village where we learned a lot about the native Alaskan's subsistance lifestyle. Of course, it rained a bit just to be consistent. Before the village, the boat paused at Susan Butcher's dog kennel where her husband Dave spoke to us over a wireless microphone. The bush pilot also spoke to us.

We bought a book about Susan's dog, Granite and had Dave sign it for Adi & Grayson. When we got back to the campground, we booked the bus trip to the Arctic Circle for the following day and found out we had to be at the campground office at 5:45am to catch the shuttle to the tour company. It was early to bed that night!

I'll bet you've forgotten what my maiden name was.....BUTCHER! So, I, too, am Susan Butcher. I used to follow her when she raced the Iditerod. When we were on our trip up there we thought about going on that trip to see her dogs, but we were discouraged from doing so. Now I really wish we had. Glad YOU did!
