It was a short 251 mile day, but we took our time on the Haines Highway. The day started out quite overcast and hazy, but cleared off nicely by the time we got to Kathleen Lake, so we stopped to view the scenery and eat lunch. It was still a bit chilly, so we ate indoors, but before we got to Whitehorse it was 76 degrees. We have now driven the entire length of the Alaska Highway.
To recap our travels on the Alaska Highway: The Alaska Highway runs roughly east & west. We got on it at Mile Zero in Dawson Creek early in our trip. On July 1, We left the Alaska Highway at Whitehorse and headed north to Dawson City & Chicken. After touring around Alaska for a couple of weeks, we picked up the Alaska Highway at the western end at Mile 1422 in Delta Junction. We took the Alaska Highway to Haines Junction where we left it again to go 150 miles south to Haines. We left Haines this morning and drove the 150 miles back to Haines Junction (on the only road to/from Haines) where we picked up the Alaska Highway again and drove eastward to Whitehorse, thus covering the entire length of the Alaska Highway.
So here we are in Whitehorse at the Hi Country RV Park, a different place than where we stayed last time we were here. Tomorrow, we'll continue eastward to about 15 miles west of Watson Lake where we'll turn south on the Cassiar Highway which will take us south thru British Columbia to Stewart, BC and Hyder, AK to watch the bears go fishing (we hope). We might run into Jim & Bonnie there, too.
Since I posted this entry, we ate dinner and took a walk around the park. We spotted Jim & Bonnie's camper about four rows away, but they're not there at the moment. Looks like we'll be heading to Hyder together. This is getting kind of spooky!
