2010 - July 16 (Day 31) Alaska Highway Mile 1225 to Haines, AK

I took a few more pictures of the "resort" we stayed in last night so you could appreciate the ambiance. We got up, showered, ate breakfast in the camper, and headed down the road after I deposited my used oil in one of their trash barrels. The first 25 miles or so to Beaver Creek was interesting due to the frost heaves in the road. After Beaver Creek, we both feared for our lives. There are frost heaves on that 40 mile section that could have swallowed the car AND the camper. In some cases, if I hadn't slowed down to 15mph, we would have been airborne. We almost were at one point. I was going to take some pictures of the heaves, but you can't really see them. They are big wavy dips across the road that are really hard to see. Most of them were marked with red flags and, even then, I hit a couple that almost launched us.

Anyway, after we got the first sixty miles or so behind us, the rest of the trip was very scenic, even thru the rain showers and clouds. We covered 356 miles today. When we got to Haines, we got a campsite then dragged the camper to the local carwash. It cost me $7.00 just to wash off the big chunks of mud from the car and the camper. We picked up a few extra pounds of mud yesterday and today in a couple of construction zones. Marsha said we'll have to spend about a wee cleaning up the exterior of the car and the camper when we get home.

So, we're in Haines for two nights. They call this the Valley of Eagles, so I guess we'll go to the Bald Eagle Foundation Museum tomorrow. There are a couple other attractions that look interesting. Stay tuned!

You're right...we never had that view!
Glad you survived the frost heaves!
We didn't experience any of that since we did the coast via ferries.
Enjoy!
